If your skin gets oily and shiny easily during the summer, here are some amazing tips on how to prevent this.
First of all, there are 4 skin types – dry, normal, combination, and oily. Dry skin never gets oily, it’s very sensitive, thin, and lacking elasticity. Normal skin type is perfect skin – smooth, glowing, and without visible pores. A combination skin type means that the skin on your cheeks is normal/dry, and the skin on your forehead, nose, and chin – oily. While oily skin type means that all the face gets oily fast and has large pores.
So if your skin gets oily during summer, your skin type should be combination or oily. My skin type is a combination so during summer the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) always gets oily much faster.

Summer Skincare Tips
1. Have a morning and nighttime skincare routine
You probably know this already, however, I still wanted to include this one. The skin should be cleansed and moisturized every morning and every night. In the morning – because during sleeping hours it pushes all the sebum out of the skin, while before going to sleep it’s necessary to remove all the makeup, SPF, sebum, and dirt from pollution.
2. Use a cleanser for oily/combination skin
Dermatologists advise using skincare products for your skin type. If your skin is oily/combination, the right cleansing product will help to control sebum production and to reduce pores.
3. Use an oil-based cleanser for your nighttime skincare routine
Koreans use an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, SPF, and sebum. And then they follow with a regular water-based cleanser to remove the remainings of the oil-based cleanser. This is called the double cleansing technique and it ensures that your skin is clean before going to sleep. The science behind this is that oil attracts oil. Makeup, SPF, and sebum are oil-based, and an oil-based cleanser helps to lift it all and wash it away.
You don’t necessarily have to look for Korean cleansing oils, there are many other great products, like this Very Cherry Cleansing Balm – it contains Sunflower and Moringa Seed Oils that cleanse the skin, as well as natural Acerola Cherry that’s rich in antioxidant vitamin C. It’s paraben-free, non-toxic, and cruelty-free. And it smells amazing – like real cherries!
4. Use a moisturizer for oily/combination skin
A moisturizer for oily/combination skin usually comes in a gel form and is non-greasy, lightweight, is fast-absorbing, and hydrating. This really helps to reduce the oiliness and shining of the skin.
5. Give extra hydration to your skin
My skin type is a combination type. However, some time ago I thought that my skin type was dry skin. When I went to my dermatologist for the first time, she said that actually my skin was combination type, but dehydrated. A result of dehydrated combination skin is an overproduction of oil in an attempt to compensate for the lack of adequate moisture. This causes enlarged pores and can increase fine lines on the forehead due to dehydration. So in order to prevent this, you have to hydrate your skin well, whether it’s dry/normal/oily/combination. Use serum and moisturizer every day twice, and hydrating face masks at least 3 times per week.
6. Look for non-comedogenic skincare products
Non-comedogenic means that a product contains ingredients that won’t clog or block the pores on your skin. Which is a great option for those who experience acne-prone, impure, oily, or combination skin.
7. Use mineral powder or face tanner instead of foundation
Personally, I don’t like using foundation, I only use concealer and mineral powder. And during the summer it’s a great choice to avoid heavy makeup because heavy makeup prevents the skin from breathing. However, if you feel that your skin is too pale, a good option would be to use a natural/non-toxic face tanner, like Vita Liberata’s.
8. Try face powder sunscreen instead of regular SPF cream
SPF is a must during spring and summer (however, I use it all year round). However, SPF cream can really make your face look shinier and it takes time to absorb. So a great alternative would be a powder sunscreen, like Colorscience Sunforgettable. It has SPF 50 protection and you can have it will you whenever you ago and apply it several times per day for constant protection. It also helps to reduce face shining because it’s a powder. What’s more, you can apply it on the area around the eyes as well, to protect the skin from UV rays.
9. Always have a mattifying powder with you
For me, a regular powder or mineral powder does equally well, I only make sure to always have it in my bag during the summer.
