1. Cleanse the skin
In the evening it’s very important to properly cleanse the skin from all the makeup, sebum and all dirt, so the skin is clean and prepared for other products.
It’s best to use double cleansing method – first, wash the face with an oil-based cleanser and then follow with a regular cleanser. Oil-based cleanser washes away all the makeup, sebum and SPF, while a water-based cleanser washes away all the remaining dirt, making your skin super clean.
Perfect cleansing is the first step towards clear glass skin. It helps prevent breakouts and increases effectivity of the following skincare products, such as serum and moisturizer.
I love using SVR Micellar Cleansing Oil. It is a very gentle cleansing oil formulated with ultra-soft surfactants, suitable for the most sensitive skin while protecting it from dryness. It is free from sulphates, parabens and preservatives. It contains Niacinamide which soothes the skin and protects from any irritations. This cleansing oil is suitable for face and body and has such a silky texture that I can’t imagine my shower routine without it anymore. What’s most important is that it doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry. I’ve used Cerave cleansing oil for face and although it does have a pleasant texture it would leave my skin feeling dry afterwards.
2. Toner
Toner is a super important step of a skincare routine and should be used right after cleansing the face. But what benefits exactly does a toner provide?
When you cleanse your face, the skin’s pH becomes slightly unbalanced. Additionally, cleansers strip moisture away from the skin in order to clean the pores and control oil production.
pH is a measure of how acidic/alkaline water is. The range goes from 0 – 14, with 7 being neutral. Anything below that is acidic, and above it – alkaline. The optimal pH value of skin on most of our face and body lies between 4.7 and 5.75 (mildly acidic). A pH of 7 (that of pure water) is considered neutral. [SOURCE]
What a toner does is first it re-balance the skin’s pH. Secondly, it hydrates the skin and prepares it for the rest of the routine. If your skin is lightly hydrated from a toner, it will better absorb the other products you’re about to layer on.
I love using organic rose water as toner. It effectively hydrates and soothes the skin, and its pH level is about 4.5 – 5 which is a perfect match for your skin’s pH.
I also love Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Adaptogens And Coconut Water. It contains aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and coconut water, it hydrates and refreshes the skin. Its pH level is about 6-7 which is acidic-neutral.
3. Serum
I use The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics serum for my face and the under eye area. It is very watery in its texture but has an intense hydrating effect. This is because it contains two different size molecule types of Hyaluronic acid that penetrate to the outer and deeper layers of the skin.
However, when it comes to prevention of skin aging you should pay attention to products that contain retinol and vitamin C. Topical vitamin C not only stimulates collagen production and helps prevent premature signs of aging – fine lines, hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity, but also revitalizes the skin and gives it a glow. It’s definitely wise to incorporate vitamin C serum into your skincare routine.
Retinol (Vitamin A) is among the most effective substances slowing the aging process. It strengthens the protective function of the epidermis, restrains transepidermal water loss, and protects collagen against degradation. Studies show that retinol stimulates the synthesis of collagen and improves skin elasticity [SOURCE]. I use retinol from The Ordinary – it is super inexpensive and makes my skin glow.
4. Sheet mask
Sheet masks are one of the most effective products to give that dewy glow look. The reason why they are so effective is that the microfiber or hydrogel material helps the skin soak up so much product, lock all the nutrients and active ingredients and don’t let them evaporate. The best thing is that your skin looks dewier, plumped and rejuvenated the moment you remove the mask.
Sheet masks are packed with hydrating, rejuvenating, smoothing and anti-aging ingredients, and contain a very high concentration of active ingredients. One of my favorite ones is this Garnier Moisture Bomb Sheet Mask that contains half a bottle of hydrating serum in 1 mask!
5. Moisturizer
When it comes to skin hydration, Korean women swear by a lightweight moisturizer followed by a rich cream to give an extra boost of hydration. This ensures locking the moisture in the skin which results in soft, smooth and glowy skin.
Another hack that they use is that they give their skin as much hydration as it needs. If you apply moisturizer and your skin absorbs it almost immediately, this means that your skin is dehydrated. Don’t be afraid to apply the same moisturizer twice or even three times until you feel it’s sufficient, and then follow with a richer, creamier lotion to lock in the moisture.
6. Night cream / Overnight mask
Night creams and overnight face masks work magic while you sleep. “During sleep, the body rebalances its hydration,” explains dermatologist Hadley King, MD. “Skin regenerates, growth hormone levels increase, allowing damaged cells to become repaired.”
Night cream supports natural skin regenerative processes, while overnight masks intensely hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. With the right products you can boost these processes and wake up with glowing and radiant skin.
These products should be applied at the last stage of your evening skin care routine.
